"Programmable people, made to order"
We were given a taste of what goes on in the Dollhouse in episode 1, but we get a deepened explanation in this next episode. This episode gives a twist about the corruption within the organization. Apparently, a doll named Alpha had some malfunctioning wiring and went berserk. This is the reason why one of the doctors had scars all over her face. A theory was that his memory wasn’t being blanked out every time, so he had a compiled amount of information still in his head.
Trust is a huge theme in this episode. A subtheme is how a person could feel as if they know someone so well, but then that person turns on them. This is shown in the episode when the “boyfriend”/ client turns on Echo and tries to hunt her down. This is obviously not a real relationship to him, since he paid a million dollars for a different girl, but Echo had no other knowledge in her head, other than thinking this man was her lover. This ties into real relationships. I have had multiple friends get totally blindsided by their significant other…cheating, dealing, or it turns out they’re gay. It happens. People change. Does it make it okay to hide this from your other? Not at all. Another instance of this sense of hardcore trust is that the boss of the Dollhouse allowed this man to take one of her dolls. I would have probably ran multiple tests on my clients before letting them take these multimillion dollar beauties.
I wonder is Echo will turn into another Alpha since she also remembers some of her experiences and is evolving.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely some possible foreshadowing there. Even though I stopped at episode 6, there were hints in the earlier episodes of the faculty getting suspicious....hmmm...
